(STATS) – Norfolk State’s 2011 MEAC football championship has been vacated as part of the NCAA sanctions lobbied against the university for inaccurate reporting of some student-athletes’ eligibility, the NCAA and the school announced Thursday.
The athletic department has been placed on two years’ probation for violations in football, men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, baseball, bowling and softball. Norfolk State said the NCAA determined that the infraction was the result of an administrative mistake and not unethical behavior.
The inaccuracy of 19 football players cost Norfolk State its wins in 2009 (seven), 2010 (six) and 2011 (nine). Overall, 97 wins in six of the sports were vacated because of the violations.
The historically black institution also will pay a $5,000 self-imposed fine.
The penalties were found during Norfolk State’s 2012 annual review of how athletes receive admission, financial aid and certification of eligibility. All NCAA schools go through the process.
In a university release, president Eddie N. Moore Jr. said, “The decision by the NCAA will serve as a catalyst to strengthen the institution’s administrative procedures in certifying student-athletes for competition. The administrative and academic departments recognize the importance of their roles in adhering to NCAA regulations and performing their duties in a timely manner. Because of the new and improved processes and the academic success of the student-athletes, the institution has identified a model to improve the retention and graduation rates of all students.”
