OSU’s Mike Gundy offers to pay for public school security

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has offered to pay for enhanced security measures to protect the school system attended by his children.

Gundy on Wednesday told the Stillwater school board he is worried there’s no plan to deal with an on-campus gunman and said that one should be developed. Gundy’s comments came amid national student walk-outs following a shooting that killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

”I know these things take time. I don’t think we have time. I’m saying, like, fast. Like, two weeks. Like, yesterday,” said Gundy, who has three children with wife, Kristen.

Gundy suggested placing retired police officers or retired members of the military in schools to provide protection and said he was willing to pay for the extra security.

”I would like to see this put in place, and until we can factor in a budget for the next year, I’m willing to foot the bill for the rest of the school year if we can protect our kids,” Gundy said.

Gundy said airports, banks and jewelry stores have plenty of security, and pointed out that it’s easy for him walk into a school during recruiting trips.
