(STATS) – Carson Wentz, Dallas Goedert, Jeremiah Briscoe … the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles may become the favorite NFL team among FCS fans.
Briscoe, the Sam Houston State quarterback who was named the FCS offensive player of the year in each of his final two seasons, agreed to a rookie free agent contract with the Eagles shortly after the NFL Draft ended Saturday.
Only the second two-time winner of the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award, Briscoe is recovering from surgery to repair a partial tear of the UCL in his throwing arm. He played through the injury during his senior season and decided to have surgery after a subpar performance in the East-West Shrine Game in January.
“All I ever wanted was a chance,” Briscoe said. “I thank God that I got this opportunity. I’m still almost speechless, but I’ve told (the Eagles) that they’re not going to regret their decision at all to take a chance on me.”
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Briscoe said he is throwing again and expects to be cleared soon to participate in the Eagles’ rookie minicamp next month. He plans to fly to Philadelphia on May 10.
He hopes to earn a spot on the roster behind Wentz, the former North Dakota State star who’s coming off an ACL tear, and Nick Foles, who replaced Wentz in December to lead the championship run. The Eagles used their second-round draft pick to select Goedert, the FCS All-America tight end out of South Dakota State.
Briscoe played three years at Sam Houston after transferring in from UAB. He passed for 4,602 yards and an FCS-record 57 touchdowns as a junior and 5,003 yards and 45 touchdowns as a senior.
