STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Penn State offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne is taking responsibility for calling the failed fourth-and-5 running play on the final drive against Ohio State, saying he didn’t give the players the best chance to succeed.
Rahne tells The Associated Press that while Penn State had some success with the inside run in similar situations earlier in the game, he failed to anticipate part of Ohio State’s defensive strategy. The fourth-and-5 run by Miles Sanders lost 2 yards.
Rahne, who is in his first season as No. 11 Penn State’s playcaller, says he was most upset coach James Franklin and quarterback Trace McSorley were left to answer for his call after Saturday night’s 27-26 loss to the third-ranked Buckeyes.
