The New York Yankees went to Tampa Bay over the weekend and took a series from the American League East-leading Rays, pushing themselves to the brink of first place despite a roster still lacking many of its key pieces due to injury. After Mother Nature intervened in the opener of their three-game set, the Yankees will try to keep up the intensity when they host the last-place Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

New York, which hosts Tampa Bay next weekend, took two of three at Tropicana Field, including a 7-1 triumph on Sunday that featured a home run by shortstop Thairo Estrada, two RBIs from third baseman Gio Urshela and two runs scored by outfielder Mike Tauchman – three players who weren’t in the team’s plans on Opening Day. “More guys just continue to step up,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. “I’m really proud of that effort. We have to grind and scratch for everything.” The Orioles avoided a three-game sweep and snapped a four-game slide with a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday in which they belted four home runs. Baltimore and New York were unable to take the field on Monday, as rain and wet field conditions forced the game to be postponed and set up a single-admission doubleheader for Wednesday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Andrew Cashner (4-1, 4.25 ERA) vs. Yankees LH J.A. Happ (2-3, 4.36)

Cashner settled for his second straight no-decision on Wednesday after allowing one run and four hits in six innings versus Boston. The 32-year-old put forth his worst performance of the season at Yankee Stadium on March 28, when he permitted six runs on as many hits with four walks in four frames of a 7-2 setback. Luke Voit set the tone by belting a three-run homer in the first inning off Cashner, who sports a 2-4 record and 4.01 ERA in eight career encounters with New York.

Happ hopes to ride the momentum of a strong start on Thursday, as he allowed just one hit and struck out a season-high seven batters over five scoreless innings in a 3-1 win versus Seattle. The 36-year-old obviously kept the ball in the park in that contest, but he surrendered three homers in a pair of meetings with Baltimore earlier this year. Happ permitted four runs and five hits – including two homers – in four innings of a 7-5 setback on March 31 before coming away with a no-decision the following week after working 4 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Yankees activated CF Aaron Hicks (back) from the injured list on Monday but placed 3B Miguel Andujar (labrum), who has gone 1-for-27 over his last seven games, and RHP Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) on the 10-day IL.

2. Orioles OF Dwight Smith Jr. and 1B Chris Davis each homered twice over the weekend.

3. New York optioned Tauchman to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday while recalling RHP Chance Adams and LHP Nestor Cortes Jr. from the RailRiders.

PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Orioles 4
