The Minnesota Twins came up on the short end of a home run-hitting contest as their four-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon, but they were able to restore order later in the day. The Twins eye their sixth win in seven contests and look to improve on the best record in the major leagues on Sunday, when they host the Detroit Tigers for the finale of their four-game series.

Minnesota (25-13) ranks second in the majors with 70 homers and hit two in the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader but dropped a 5-3 decision when Detroit – the American League’s worst power-hitting team – muscled up with four blasts. The Twins added two more home runs en route to an 8-3 victory in the nightcap, including a three-run shot by C.J. Cron that broke open a one-run game and capped the 29-year-old’s second four-hit effort in three contests. Ronny Rodriguez’s two solo shots in the early game allowed his team to hang around long enough for John Hicks to connect on the go-ahead homer in the ninth as the Tigers posted their first win over Minnesota in four tries this season. However, the AL’s lowest-scoring offense flamed out after a quick start in the nightcap and has scored three runs or fewer in 22 of its 37 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Daniel Norris (1-1, 3.81 ERA) vs. Twins LH Martin Perez (5-0, 2.83)

Norris did not allow an extra-base hit over five innings on Tuesday but still suffered his first loss of the season after permitting three runs on five hits and two walks against the Los Angeles Angels. The Tennessean has worked exactly five frames in each start since joining the rotation on April 21, posting a 3.60 ERA over that stretch. Nelson Cruz is 5-for-10 with a homer against Norris, who yielded one run and six hits in three innings of relief at Minnesota on April 14.

Perez has been a revelation since becoming a member of the rotation on April 15, winning four of his five turns while allowing a total of six runs over 33 innings. The 28-year-old’s best performance of the season came in a victory at Toronto on Monday, when he gave up a season-low two hits and registered a season-high nine strikeouts in seven scoreless frames. Miguel Cabrera is 3-for-6 with four walks and two RBIs versus Perez, who is 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA in five games (four starts) against Detroit.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cron homered in both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader, giving him four of his nine blasts this year in his last seven games.

2. Hicks was batting .406 during a nine-game hitting streak before going 0-for-3 with a walk in the nightcap.

3. Twins OF Eddie Rosario has recorded at least one hit in seven of his last eight contests but still is batting only .238 this month.

PREDICTION: Twins 6, Tigers 2
