Houston used a big second half to cool down sizzling Connecticut last game. The Cougars, looking to improve their NCAA Tournament resume, aim for their 20th win of the season when they visit Memphis in an American Athletic Conference game Sunday.

Houston won six of its last seven and boosted its RPI to 58 after defeating UConn 75-70. The Cougars got 25 points from Damyean Dotson and erased a double-digit deficit to notch the win and take over third place in the AAC. Memphis fell out of contention in the conference after dropping three straight games, including an 87-74 loss at No. 16 Cincinnati last time out. The Tigers, however, edged the host Cougars 70-67 in the first meeting of the season, getting 28 point from KJ Lawson in the overtime decision.

ABOUT HOUSTON (19-8, 10-5 AAC): With a win against the Tigers, the Cougars clinch a first-round bye for the AAC tournament, set for March 9-12 at Hartford, Conn. Junior guard Rob Gray continues to lead the conference in scoring at 20.4 points per game and shook off a slow start against the Huskies to notch 16 points, and is the only Cougar to score double-digit points in all 27 games. Dotson averages 17.5 points and knocked down at least one 3-pointer in every game this season.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (18-10, 8-7): The Tigers, who dropped a season-high three straight, got 23 points and 11 assists from Jeremiah Martin against the Bearcats, and cut a 24-point lead down to six late in the loss. Dedric Lawson had 21 points with 10 rebounds for his 18th double-double of the season. “Going into the next three games, I got a hunch that we’re going to go 3-0,” Lawson told reporters. “It’s most definitely a crucial win for us going into postseason play, something that we need.”

TIP-INS
1. Houston is second in the ACC averaging 8.6 3-pointers made per game.
2. Dedric Lawson needs 40 rebounds to break the ACC single-season record of 321 set by former UConn star Daniel Hamilton.
3. Memphis junior Markel Crawford, averaging 13.6 points, went scoreless for the second time this season in the Tigers’ loss at Cincinnati.
