The San Antonio Spurs carry a lot of momentum and a four-game winning streak as they return home from an eight-game road trip that lasted almost a month to face the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Spending most of the month of February on the road has become commonplace for the Spurs, who relinquish their building to facilities that move in and three weeks of performances by the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
The Spurs (45-13) went 6-2 on this year’s trip, a notch below the 7-1 record they recorded in 2016; San Antonio has an all-time record of 88-37 on the Rodeo Road Trip, which began when the Spurs moved into the AT&T Center in 2003.
“Camaraderie is always a big thing, especially with new players,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said before the trip. “You get used to each other, break bread and find out about each other’s families. It makes you want to play together.”
San Antonio was already one of the NBA’s best road teams before heading out for its 20-day trip that saw it play eight teams in seven different cities, with the All-Star break in the middle.
“It was a good trip — we had one bad night out of 11 or 12 days,” Popovich said. “They maintained their focus really well, especially coming back off the (All-Star) break and playing the last couple of games. I thought we did a good job.”
And there’s another advantage to being on the road for most of February — San Antonio will play 12 of its 17 games in March at home and 16 of its final 24 regular-season games will be contested at the AT&T Center.
The Spurs ended the road trip with an easier-than-the score-indicates 119-98 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in which All-Star starter Kawhi Leonard scored 25 points 16 of which came in the first quarter.
LaMarcus Aldridge contributed 16 points and nine rebounds and Pau Gasol added 15 points and seven boards in the victory for San Antonio, which beat the Lakers for the eighth consecutive time and seventh game in a row at Staples Center.
One of the teams San Antonio beat on this year’s road trip is the Pacers, who fell 110-106 in Indianapolis on Feb. 13.
Indiana heads to the Alamo City off a come-from-behind 117-108 victory at Houston on Monday that allowed the Pacers (31-29) to win for just the second time in their past nine games. Wednesday’s game in San Antonio is the third of a five-game road trip for Indiana.
Jeff Teague scored 25 points to lead the Pacers against Houston while reserve Rodney Stuckey had 17 of the 48 points scored by Indiana’s bench.
“Our second unit has really carried us through a lot of portions of games,” said Paul George, the Pacers’ regular leading scorer, who had 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while playing just 29 minutes because of foul trouble. “In our past couple of games, they’ve been excellent.”
The Pacers spotted Houston an 18-2 lead but eventually completed a 31-point turnaround by dominating the boards and the paint, outrebounding Houston 55-39 while producing 50 points in the lane.
“That’s the thing you have to do,” Pacers coach Nate McMillan said. “If they’re switching their guards on our bigs, and you’ve got to go where the advantage is, you have to be patient and slow down. We rushed a couple of passes early, but we started to settle down and allow those bigs to get position. They took their time and were able to finish.”
San Antonio has not lost at home to Indiana since Nov. 8, 2014 (a five-game win streak) and has garnered a 24-4 all-time home record against the Pacers. The Spurs and Indiana first met on Oct. 10, 1973 in Indianapolis when both teams played in the ABA.
