Two teams with the unenviable task of traveling and lacing them up again less than 24 hours after dramatic games meet up at the Talking Stick Resort Arena on Sunday night when the Phoenix Suns host the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Suns made a happy flight home from Dallas early Sunday morning after Devin Booker beat the buzzer with a 19-footer that provided the difference in a 100-98 win over the playoff-contending Mavericks.
Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers arrived in Phoenix in a whole different frame of mind, having blown a 21-point lead at home in a 125-124 overtime loss to the Washington Wizards that featured a controversial finish.
Overtime is nothing new to the Suns and Trail Blazers, who needed the five additional minutes to decide their first meeting this season. Phoenix prevailed on that occasion, 118-115, before the Trail Blazers evened the score six nights later with a 124-121 victory.
The Suns’ win at Dallas was their fourth in the last six games. They were making a quick trip to Texas in between a five-game homestand, during which they won three games, and a three-game home sequence that begins with Portland’s visit.
Booker’s game-winner was his second of the season, giving Phoenix a league-leading four this season.
“Devin played on another level,” Suns coach Earl Watson assured the media in the wake of the second-year star’s 36-point outing. “He’s 20 years old., Two game-winners so far this year. He wanted to take the last shot, and he’s confident that it’ll go in. The kid is going to be pretty special.”
The Suns offered up a new look in Dallas after starting center Alex Len injured his hip during pregame warmups.
Instead of reinserting Tyson Chandler into the starting lineup, Watson decided to give his veteran big man a ninth consecutive game off, and went small with rookie forward Derrick Jones Jr.
Jones, who had never previously had more than two rebounds in a game, contributed a season-best seven boards to the win.
But after making his first shot — his 10th consecutive made field goal spanning six games — Jones missed his last two attempts, lowering his remarkable season field goal percentage to 77.4 percent (24-for-31).
Portland fell victim to a Markieff Morris 17-footer — and perhaps a referee’s error — in the final second of its overtime loss Saturday.
A video replay shown on the arena scoreboard seemed to show Morris stepping out of bounds before hitting the game-winner with four-tenths of a second remaining. However, the play was not reviewable by rule.
“It’s a time of the season where you need these game,” Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard insisted to reporters afterward. “Every little thing counts, and that’s (baloney) that you can’t look at that. Now, obviously, we had plenty of opportunity to win the game. We was up 20. But it’s the NBA and things happen.”
The overtime game was the second in a row for the Trail Blazers, who went an extra session to beat Philadelphia 114-108 on Thursday.
The hard-to-swallow defeat Saturday snapped Portland’s four-game winning streak.
C.J. McCollum had 34 points and Lillard 33 in the loss.
