The newest piece of the Atlanta Braves’ constant young wave of talent has arrived in the major leagues, and Austin Riley will look to continue making an impact in Thursday’s series finale at home against the St. Louis Cardinals. One of the top-ranked prospects in the Braves minor-league system homered in his big-league debut Wednesday, helping power Atlanta to its fourth victory in five games with a 4-0 win that evened the three-game series at one game apiece.
Promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier Wednesday after outfielder Ender Inciarte landed on the injured list with a lumbar strain in his back, the 22-year-old Riley finished 1-for-3 with a 438-foot homer leading off the fourth inning, helping 21-year-old Mike Soroka get his fourth win and lower his ERA to 0.98 in six starts. After scoring 14 runs in the series opener, St. Louis was limited to three hits in falling for the 10th time in its past 13 games. Wainwright already has made as many starts this season as he did in an injury-marred 2018 (eight), and the 14-year veteran has given up more than three earned runs only twice.
