Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros have a shot at 100 victories and look to extend their winning streak to six games when they host the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Altuve matched his career best with his 24th homer in Tuesday’s 3-1 triumph as American League West champion Houston recorded its 92nd win of the campaign.

The Astros need to go 8-4 the rest of the way to become the second squad in franchise history to reach the 100-win mark – the other being the 1998 team that won 102 contests before losing to San Diego in the opening round of the National League playoffs. Altuve is closing in on his second straight AL batting title and third in four seasons behind a .348 average, which is 15 points higher than that of Chicago’s Avisail Garcia. The 26-year-old Garcia is batting a torrid .391 this month with eight multi-hit performances, including a 5-for-5 effort against Detroit on Thursday. Chicago has dropped its last two games by a cumulative 15-1 score after winning six of its previous eight contests.

Shields has won back-to-back starts after capturing just two of his first 17 turns. The 35-year-old defeated the Tigers in his last start despite serving up three homers while allowing four runs and nine hits over six innings. Shields is 2-1 with a 1.70 ERA in five career starts against the Astros, with his most-recent outing coming as a member of the Padres in 2015, when he gave up one earned run and recorded 12 strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision.

Peacock halted his six-start winless streak by giving up one run and three hits over six innings in defeating the Los Angeles Angels in his last turn. The 29-year-old has doubled his career victory total with a strong campaign and is limiting opposing batters to a .213 average. Peacock is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two career starts against the White Sox, including a win on Aug. 10 in which he allowed one run and seven hits in 6 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Altuve was presented Tuesday with the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, given to the player “who best exemplifies the character” of Gehrig.

2. Chicago 1B Jose Abreu drove in his 98th run on Tuesday and is two shy of joining Joe DiMaggio and Albert Pujols as the only players to begin their careers with at least four straight 25-homer, 100-RBI campaigns.

3. Houston RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (arm fatigue), who has made just one start in the last seven-plus weeks, will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.
