DENVER (AP) Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez has not allowed a hit through six innings against the Chicago Cubs.
The 22-year-old walked Kyle Schwarber in the first and then retired 16 straight, getting help when right fielder Carlos Gonzalez made a diving catch. Marquez struck out seven by mixing in a mid-90s fastball with an assortment of breaking pitches.
He was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on April 25 to fill in for an injured Jon Gray.
There has only been one no-hitter at Coors Field – by Hideo Nomo on Sept 17, 1996, when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The only no-hitter in Rockies history was by Ubaldo Jimenez on April 17, 2010, at Atlanta.
Colorado leads 1-0 on Ian Desmond’s RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth.
