Frazier grand slam in 12th lifts White Sox over Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Chicago’s Todd Frazier hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the 12th inning with his second homer of the game, powering the White Sox over the Rangers 8-4 on Monday and pushing their lead in the American League Central division to six games.

While Chicago left it late, the New York Mets made a mark early with a homer on the first pitch of the game en route to victory at the Los Angeles Dodgers, maintaining a narrow lead in the National League East ahead of Washington, which edged Detroit.

Seattle capitalized on Texas’ loss by building its lead in the AL West with a win against Tampa Bay.

Chicago’s Frazier had four hits and a career-high six RBIs and pushed his home run tally into double figures in a promising start to his first season with the White Sox.

Chicago escaped with victory after the bullpen had blown leads in both the eighth and ninth innings. Coming into the game, the White Sox relievers had a majors-leading 1.82 earned run average.

New York’s Steven Matz won his fifth straight start as he guided the Mets to a 4-2 win at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Matz allowed two runs in six innings and struck out five in the opener of a four-game series. Matz also hit an RBI double, helping himself out of trouble after New York’s lead had been trimmed to 3-2.

Curtis Granderson hit a homer on the first pitch, and Kevin Plawecki also went keep for the Mets in their first meeting with the Dodgers since their playoff series last year.

Washington’s Clint Robinson hit a walk-off homer, giving the Nationals a 5-4 comeback win against Detroit.

Moments after Bryce Harper was ejected from the dugout for arguing an umpire’s call, pinch hitter Robinson connected on a Mark Lowe pitch to end it.

As he joined his teammates in racing to the plate to greet Robinson for a celebration, Harper yelled something in the direction of the umpire.

Seattle’s Ketel Marte hit a tiebreaking three-run homer and had a career-high four hits to lead the Mariners to a 5-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

Marte went 4 for 5 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. With the game tied in the sixth inning, Marte hammered the first offering from reliever Steve Geltz over the right field wall to give the Mariners a 5-2 cushion.

Toronto won on its first visit to San Francisco in three years, with Aaron Sanchez putting in a strong pitching performance to steer the Blue Jays to a 3-1 victory.

Sanchez allowed one run and one walk with five strikeouts in a 105-pitch outing.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the Blue Jays.

Boston’s Jackie Bradley Jr. extended his career-high hitting streak to 15 games with a two-run single in Boston’s six-run fourth and added a grand slam two innings later, carrying the Red Sox over struggling Oakland 14-7.

The Athletics are 1-7 in May.

Cincinnati’s maligned bullpen stood up with three scoreless innings to close out a 3-2 win against Pittsburgh, with all the Reds runs coming from three solo homers.

Arizona’s Jake Lamb homered, tripled and drove in four runs to lead the Diamondbacks to a 10-5 win against Colorado.

Miami’s Jose Fernandez pitched seven scoreless innings in his longest start this season, guiding the Marlins to a 4-1 win against Milwaukee and improving his record at Marlins Park to 20-1.

Houston’s Jose Altuve drove in three runs and Colby Rasmus two as the Astros jumped on Cleveland ace Corey Kluber for five runs in the third and cruised to a 7-1 win over the Indians.

New York’s Carlos Beltran hit two of five solo homers in the first three innings that set the Yankees up for a 6-3 win against Kansas City.
