KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Lucas Giolito is through six hitless innings for the Chicago White Sox against the Kansas City Royals.
Giolito walked Whit Merrifield on four pitches leading off Sunday’s game but has retired 18 straight since. Billy Hamilton nearly had a hit for Kansas City in the sixth inning, but first baseman Yonder Alonso dived to catch his line drive down the line for the second out.
Giolito has struck out seven and thrown 78 pitches. The 24-year-old right-hander is making his first start of the season. He was 10-13 with a 6.13 ERA last season, with opponents batting .250 against him.
Chicago is leading 4-0 behind home runs by Alonso and Jose Abreu.
