LEADING OFF: Rays, Red Sox begin series after rainout

LEADING OFF: Rays, Red Sox begin series after rainoutBy The Associated Press

A look at what’s happening around the majors today:

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY

The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox try again after Friday’s series opener at Fenway Park was postponed by rain. Tampa Bay is on top of the AL East with a 16-9 record, but it was swept by Boston last weekend. Right-hander Josh Smith was slated to make his Red Sox debut, but he is going to be skipped in favor of David Price. The veteran left-hander is 5-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 15 career appearances against his first major league team. Charlie Morton starts for Tampa Bay.

THOR VS. YELI

Noah Syndergaard tries to get back on track when he pitches for the New York Mets against Christian Yelich and the Milwaukee Brewers. Syndergaard hit his first homer of the season Sunday at St. Louis, but he also allowed four earned runs in five innings in a 6-4 loss to the Cardinals. The 26-year-old right-hander is 1-1 with a 6.88 ERA in his last three starts. Yelich, the reigning NL MVP, is off to a terrific start. But he is 3 for 17 with no homers and two RBIs for his career against Syndergaard.

BERRY, BERRY GOOD

Jose Berrios looks to continue his solid start when the Minnesota Twins host the Baltimore Orioles. Berrios, who made the All-Star team last year for the first time, has won each of his last two outings to improve to 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA on the year. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 3.62 ERA in five career starts against Baltimore. Dan Straily goes for his second win with the Orioles.
