LEADING OFF: Sept. 11 remembrances, key AL East matchup

A look at what’s happening all around the major leagues today:

___

REMEMBERING THE DAY

At Great American Ball Park, Camden Yards and every stadium where a big league game is played, there will be tributes to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Players, managers, coaches and umpires will wear caps with flag patches, and there will be moments of silence and other remembrances.

RAIN GAME

Weather permitting, David Price and the AL East-leading Blue Jays begin a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. Toronto is 1 1/2 games ahead of New York after Thursday’s rainout, and the teams are set for a doubleheader Saturday. Impressive rookie Luis Severino starts the opener for the Yankees.

TIME OFF

Many teams are trying to find ways to get extra days off for starting pitchers down the stretch — Jake Arrieta got a break when the Cubs were rained out in Philadelphia. He leads the majors with 18 wins and has a 17-inning shutout string.

RUN IT UP

Texas returns home after getting shut out four times during a 5-5 road trip. The playoff contenders have been blanked two in a row going into this matchup with Oakland righty Jesse Chavez (7-14). Rangers star Josh Hamilton is having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, and the team hopes he can play again this season.

PAPI POWER

David Ortiz needs two home runs to become the 27th player to reach No. 500. The Boston slugger takes aim at Tropicana Field against Tampa Bay ace Chris Archer. Ortiz homered off the All-Star earlier this summer, then said his verbal tiff with Archer that began last year was over.
