A look at what’s happening all around the major leagues Monday:
—
ON THE PROWL
Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers try to wreck Pittsburgh’s home opener. Anibal Sanchez hopes to pitch them to their first 7-0 start since 1984, the year Detroit romped to the World Series championship.
ROLLIN’ ROYALS
Danny Duffy starts for 6-0 Kansas City at Target Field. It’s the home opener for Minnesota under new manager Paul Molitor – the Twins are 1-5 under the Hall of Fame player.
SEEING GREEN
The Red Sox head back to Fenway Park for their much-anticipated home opener after a brutal, snowbound winter for the region. Rick Porcello (0-1), acquired from Detroit in December and signed to a four-year, $82.5 million contract last week, starts for Boston vs. Jordan Zimmermann (1-0) and the Nationals.
ANOTHER TRY
Mat Latos starts against Atlanta, hoping for a better showing than his debut for the hometown Marlins. Last week, he got only two outs while giving up seven runs to the Braves. ”I get redemption,” he said. ”It’s always good to get a second chance. Something like that hasn’t happened to me before in my six-year career.”
PASSPORT, PLEASE
Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred makes his first official visit to Toronto when he throws out the first pitch at the Blue Jays’ home opener. R.A. Dickey starts vs. Tampa Bay.
