Mets set to introduce Mickey Callaway as manager

NEW YORK (AP) The Mets are set to introduce new manager Mickey Callaway at Citi Field.

The team announced Monday that Callaway has been hired as the 21st manager in franchise history. New York called an afternoon news conference at its home ballpark.

The 42-year-old Callaway was the Cleveland Indians’ pitching coach for the past five seasons. He and the Mets agreed to a three-year deal Sunday.

Callaway replaces Terry Collins, who stepped down at the end of the season with his contract about to expire. Collins, 68, spent seven seasons managing the Mets. He was the longest-tenured skipper in club history and the oldest manager in the major leagues. He accepted a position as a special assistant to New York general manager Sandy Alderson.

Following consecutive playoff appearances under Collins, including a trip to the 2015 World Series, the injury-riddled Mets tumbled to 70-92 in 2017 during their worst season this decade.
