Seattle agrees to 1-year deal with Martin

SEATTLE (AP) The Mariners and outfielder Leonys Martin have agreed to a contract for the 2016 season and avoided salary arbitration.

Seattle announced the agreement Thursday. No financial terms were disclosed.

Left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush and right-hander Evan Scribner remain arbitration-eligible.

Martin was acquired via trade from Texas during Seattle’s busy offseason makeover with the idea that he will be in a rotation among the Mariners’ starting outfielders. Martin is coming off a down year at the plate with Texas, where he hit .219 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 25 RBIs in 95 games.

Martin signed a $15.5 million, five-year contract with the Rangers in May 2011 that included a $5 million signing bonus. It was one of the largest-ever contracts for a Cuban defector at the time, before deals for players like Jose Abreu and Yoenis Cespedes.
