Segedin’s dream debut leads Dodgers over Red Sox

LOS ANGELES (AP) Los Angeles’ Rob Segedin set a Dodgers record by driving in four runs on his major league debut while Adrian Gonzalez hit his 300th career home run in an 8-5 win against Boston on Sunday that moved the Dodgers within one game of the lead in the National League West.

The Dodgers closed in on San Francisco, which was shut out in a loss at Washington.

Texas boosted its lead in the American League West with an 11-inning win against Houston, while the New York Yankees beat Cleveland in a game played hours after Alex Rodriguez announced his imminent departure from the Yankees.

Los Angeles’ Segedin had a dream debut in the majors, hitting a two-run double on his second at-bat, in the fourth inning, and then coming up again in the fifth with the bases loaded and lining a hit to right field to bring in two more runs.

Gonzalez, Howie Kendrick and Justin Turner all hit homers for the Dodgers.

Washington’s Tanner Roark and his relievers outdueled San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner to give the Nationals a 1-0 win.

Roark pitched seven scoreless innings. His last pitch came with runners on second and third, and center fielder Ben Revere made a spectacular, over-the-shoulder catch to rob Brandon Belt of a hit that would have put the Giants ahead.

Bumgarner was an unlucky loser, giving up just two hits, including a homer by Wilson Ramos in the seventh which was the only score of the game.

Texas’ Ian Desmond hit a tiebreaking single in the 11th inning to give the Rangers a 5-3 victory against Houston; their 11th win in 13 games against their state and division rival this season.

After Shin-Soo Choo led off the 11th with a double, Desmond followed with a single to put Texas ahead and Rougned Odor later drove in another run. Matt Bush struck out George Springer with runners at first and third to end it.

The Astros have lost eight of 10 and dropped to third in the AL West behind Seattle.

New York’s Masahiro Tanaka rebounded from two rocky outings and guided the Yankees to a 3-2 win against Cleveland.

Hit hard by the Mets in a Subway Series loss last week, Tanaka pitched six scoreless innings.

Didi Gregorius homered for the Yankees, who began the day by announcing the departure of Rodriguez as the team overhauls its underachieving roster.

A-Rod, one of the most productive hitters but one of the most maligned players in baseball history for his admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs, said he will make his last appearance at home against Tampa Bay on Friday.

New York’s Neil Walker hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the top of the ninth to lead the Mets over Detroit 3-1.

The Mets were victimized by some bad luck when the Tigers tied it with back-to-back infield singles in the seventh, but after escaping the eighth thanks to a Detroit base-running blunder, New York retook the lead when Walker went deep off Francisco Rodriguez.

Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks pitched into the eighth inning to steer the Cubs past Oakland 3-1, completing a three-game sweep.

Hendricks was dominant against an A’s team that has lost eight of nine games. He retired 17 straight batters before giving up a solo homer with one out in the eighth inning.

The Cubs’ seventh straight win improved them to a major league-best 69-41 and marked their 10th series sweep this season. That topped their mark from a year ago, and increased their lead in the NL Central to 11-1/2 games over St. Louis.

Baltimore’s Manny Machado became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings, driving in a career-high seven runs in a 10-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Machado hit a two-run homer in the first, a three-run shot in the second and a two-run homer in the third. According to STATS, the only other player to homer in each of the first three innings was Carl Reynolds of the White Sox in 1930.

The Orioles have hit a major league-best 168 homers this season.

Kansas City’s Yordano Ventura pitched effectively into the seventh inning as the Royals beat Toronto 7-1.

Ventura was 0-5 in his past seven starts but limited the Blue Jays to one run in 6 2/3 innings.

Kendrys Morales hit his third career grand slam and first in four years.

Miami’s Ichiro Suzuki notched his 3,000th career hit – becoming the 30th player to reach that milestone – as the Marlins beat Colorado 10-7.

Seattle’s James Paxton pitched into the ninth inning before leaving after being hit on the arm by a line drive, and led the Mariners to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Philadelphia’s Tommy Joseph drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh as the Phillies edged San Diego 6-5, and turned their first triple play in seven years and the first ever at Petco Park.

Cincinnati’s Billy Hamilton stole four bases to boost his majors lead in that category, and also had three hits and scored three runs to lead the Reds to a 7-3 win at Pittsburgh.

Atlanta’s Mike Foltynewicz worked six strong innings as the Braves beat St. Louis 6-3.

Arizona’s Jake Lamb and Phil Gosselin each hit two-run homers during a five-run fifth inning that lifted the Diamondbacks over Milwaukee 9-3.

Minnesota’s Miguel Sano homered twice and drove in four runs as the Twins defeated Tampa Bay 6-3.
