Tigers’ Cabrera, Martinez connect against live pitching

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) – Detroit Tigers sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez are back on the field after rehabbing injuries.

Both played in minor league games against the Houston Astros on Saturday for their first live pitching of the spring.

Cabrera singled in his first three at-bats and Martinez hit a long home run.

Cabrera underwent surgery to remove a bone spur from his right ankle and had a stress fracture repaired in his right foot. Martinez had surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Both are expected to be designated hitters in Sunday’s split-squad games with Martinez going to Kissimmee to face the Atlanta Braves and Cabrera staying at home against the Washington Nationals.
