COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett will undergo season-ending knee surgery for the second consecutive year.
Verrett will end the season on injured reserve for the third time in his four-year career. Verrett was limited to six games as a rookie because of a shoulder injury, and he played in four games last season before undergoing surgery to repair a partially torn ACL.
Verrett missed last week’s game against the Miami Dolphins because of soreness in his surgically repaired left knee and had already been ruled out against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Trevor Williams, a second-year undrafted free agent from Penn State, will replace Verrett in the starting lineup.
When he has been available, Verrett has looked every bit worth the first-round pick the Chargers used on him in 2014. Verrett played in the Pro Bowl in 2015, intercepting three passes and defending 12 while starting 14 games.
