The New York Yankees went into Tampa Bay over the weekend and took a series off the American League East-leading Rays, pushing themselves to the brink of first place despite a roster still lacking many of its key pieces due to injury. The Yankees will try to keep the intensity up when they return home to host the last-place Baltimore Orioles on Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

New York, which hosts Tampa Bay next weekend, took two out of three at Tropicana Field, capped by a 7-1 triumph on Sunday that featured a home run from shortstop Thairo Estrada, two RBIs from third baseman Gio Urshela and two runs scored from Mike Tauchman – three players who weren’t in the team’s plans on Opening Day. “More guys just continue to step up,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. “I’m really proud of that effort. We have to grind and scratch for everything.” The Orioles avoided a three-game sweep and snapped a four-game slide with a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday while belting four home runs. New York right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga will try to keep Baltimore’s offense in the park on Monday while right-hander David Hess takes the mound for the Orioles.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH David Hess (1-4, 5.50 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Jonathan Loaisiga (1-1, 4.50)

Hess took a no-hitter into the seventh inning on April 1 but failed to complete six innings in any of his next six outings. The 25-year-old was reached for three runs on three hits – two homers – in four innings against Boston on Tuesday and surrendered 10 home runs in his last 26 frames. Hess worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen against New York on Opening Day but was knocked around for four runs on five hits – three homers – at home against the Yankees in a five-inning start on April 7.

Loaisiga returned to the majors on Wednesday and got the start against Seattle but suffered the loss while surrendering four runs on six hits and a pair of walks in four innings. The Nicaragua native made three appearances – two starts – in the majors last month and yielded a total of three runs in 10 frames. Loaisiga made one relief appearance against Baltimore last season and was charged with two runs on as many hits in one-third of an inning.
