George Springer and the Houston Astros will try to continue their impressive offensive surge when they open a three-game series at the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Springer was 5-for-5 with two homers, five runs scored and four RBIs in Sunday’s 15-5 rout of the Texas Rangers, the Astros’ fifth consecutive win and their eighth in the last nine overall.

Alex Bregman also went deep twice for Houston, which established season highs in runs and hits (18) on Sunday and is averaging 8.2 runs during its 8-1 stretch. Springer is batting .452 with six home runs and 13 RBIs in 11 games this month for a team that has 28 homers over its last 10 contests. The Tigers are at the other end of the spectrum when it comes to power with an American League-low 32 homers, but they got two of them in Sunday’s 5-3 win at Minnesota to gain a split of a four-game set. Nicholas Castellanos had one of the long balls in a 3-for-4 effort for Detroit while Miguel Cabrera, who is batting .379 at home, added an RBI single.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Brad Peacock (3-2, 4.30 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (4-2, 2.86)

Peacock elected to work out of the windup for the first time since 2016 in his last start and came out of it with outstanding results, limiting the Kansas City Royals to three hits in seven scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts. He gave up seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings in his previous outing at Minnesota. The 31-year-old has a 2.38 ERA in five career matchups (three starts) with the Tigers.

Boyd has been incredibly consistent over the past month-plus, posting seven consecutive quality starts after yielding a run and three hits in a win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. He has 63 strikeouts and just 36 hits allowed in 50 1/3 frames on the season. Catcher Robinson Chirinos is 3-for-7 with two home runs against the Oregon State product, who is 2-0 despite a 5.71 ERA in three career starts versus Houston.
