Miguel Sano is displaying signs that he could be finding his former All-Star form as the Minnesota Twins enter Tuesday’s contest against the host Los Angeles Angels. The 26-year-old Dominican slugged a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning on Monday as the Twins posted a 3-1 triumph in the opener of the three-game series.

Sano has belted two homers in five games since his return from a right heel injury, and his game-winning blast was a powerful shot into the stands in right-center field. He swatted 25 home runs in 2016 and topped that total the following season, when he hit a career-best 28 while making the American League All-Star squad. Minnesota has prevailed in six of its last seven games while the Angels have scored a total of two runs while losing back-to-back games. Mike Trout was hitless in four at-bats in the series opener and has gone seven contests without a homer.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Michael Pineda (3-3, 5.55 ERA) vs. Angels RH Trevor Cahill (2-4, 6.95)

Pineda ended his five-start winless streak last time out by allowing three runs and five hits over seven innings in a win over Seattle. The 30-year-old has had issues keeping the ball in the park, as his 13 homers allowed are one shy of being tied for most in the majors. Pineda is 1-1 with a 6.08 ERA in four career outings against the Angels and has struggled with Albert Pujols (4-for-9).

Cahill was roughed up for six runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings in his last turn as he lost to the Twins in Minneapolis. The 31-year-old has pitched 44 innings and is among the players who have served up 14 blasts – a vast departure from last season, when he allowed just eight in 110 frames. Cahill is 1-4 with a 6.00 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts) against Minnesota and gave up a homer to Byron Buxton in Wednesday’s outing.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels SS Andrelton Simmons (ankle) departed in the eighth inning on Monday after awkwardly hitting first base on an infield out, but MGR Brad Ausmus said X-rays were negative and that he will undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

2. Minnesota rookie INF Luis Arraez went 3-for-4 on Monday and is 5-for-8 in three major-league contests.

3. Los Angeles DH Shohei Ohtani (hand) was hit while swinging and missing for a strikeout in the eighth inning, and Ausmus said X-rays were negative with no further testing currently in the plans.

PREDICTION: Twins 6, Angels 4
