The Seattle Mariners are the top power-hitting team in the league, but the Minnesota Twins proved in the series opener that they can slug it out with the best of them. The Twins aim for their fourth consecutive victory when they continue their four-game set against the host Mariners on Friday.

Seattle belted four home runs on Thursday to grab the major-league lead with 87, but the Twins hit four shots of their own en route to an 11-6 triumph. Jason Castro and Max Kepler went deep in the third inning while C.J. Cron (4-for-5) and Byron Buxton homered during a seven-run fourth as Minnesota increased its season total to 80, which ranks third in the majors. Daniel Vogelbach launched a three-run homer for the Mariners, who have lost five of seven contests and 13 of their last 17. The 26-year-old has gone deep in three straight games, collecting seven RBIs in that span, and has recorded 12 homers in 117 at-bats over 38 contests this season after hitting four in 87 at-bats over 37 games last year.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LH Martin Perez (5-1, 3.11 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Marco Gonzales (5-2, 3.18)

Perez saw his four-start winning streak come to an end on Sunday, when he allowed three runs and four hits – two homers – over five innings against Detroit in his first loss of the season. The 28-year-old Venezuelan, who suffered a contusion on his left foot in the setback, gave up a total of five runs over 27 frames during the streak but just one in the final three victories. Perez owns a 7-5 record and 3.38 ERA in 19 starts and two relief appearances against Seattle in his career.

Gonzales has lost two of his last three starts, surrendering 10 runs over 5 2/3 innings in the setbacks – although only half of them were earned. The 27-year-old native of Colorado won his first three home decisions this season before yielding six runs – three earned – on five hits and three walks in 1 2/3 frames in a loss to the Chicago Cubs on May 1. Gonzales will be facing Minnesota for the first time in his career but has enjoyed success against Cron (0-for-8) in his career.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners OF Mitch Haniger has gone 5-for-14 during his four-game hitting streak.

2. Seattle OF Mallex Smith was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday and belted a solo homer in his first game with the team since April 28.

3. Minnesota purchased the contract of Austin Adams from Triple-A Rochester, optioned Trevor Hildenberger to the Red Wings and designated fellow RHP Addison Reed for assignment.

PREDICTION: Twins 7, Mariners 5
