The Boston Red Sox hardly looked like world beaters, much less World Series champions, through the first month of the season but have come alive behind a lineup that is starting to resemble last year’s juggernaut. Boston has won 10 of 12 and will take a four-game winning streak into Sunday afternoon’s series finale against the visiting Seattle Mariners.
The Red Sox scored at least five runs in 11 of their last 12 wins and have outscored Seattle 23-6 in the series to move two games above .500 for the first time this season. Boston spotted the Mariners an early four-run lead Saturday before rallying for a 9-5 victory as Sandy Leon swatted a three-run homer and Mitch Moreland went deep for the second time in as many games. Jay Bruce is not close to hitting his weight but clubbed his third homer against Boston this season for reeling Seattle, which has dropped 14 of its last 18. The Mariners, losers of three straight to fall to 2-7 on their 10-game road trip, will send ace Marco Gonzales to the mound Sunday to oppose Hector Velazquez.

Gonzales rebounded from his lone wretched outing with a superb performance last time out at Yankee Stadium, allowing one run on three hits over six innings before the bullpen coughed up the lead to deny him a victory. He opened the season with seven solid starts, including a victory over Boston in which he permitted four runs (three earned) and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Jackie Bradley Jr. is 3-for-5 and J.D. Martinez 3-for-6 against Gonzales.
Velazquez has alternated between the bullpen and starting rotation while the Red Sox attempt to navigate through injuries to Nathan Eovaldi and David Price, but he has yet to pitch more than three innings in any of his 11 appearances. The 30-year-old Mexican made his fifth start at Baltimore on Tuesday and did not figure in the decision after allowing two runs on three hits over three innings. Velazquez faced Seattle twice in relief in March, giving up three runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings.
