Cardinals rally in 7th to beat Nationals 8-5

ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis’ Jason Heyward hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to key a five-run rally that lifted the Cardinals to an 8-5 win against Washington on Monday, pushing their lead in the National League Central division back out to five games.

The Cardinals boosted their lead on idle Pittsburgh in the Central while, in the NL West division, the Los Angeles Dodgers needed 14 innings to see off San Francisco 5-4 to widen the gap between the top teams to 4-1/2 games.

In the American League, there was mixed fortunes for the division leaders, with Toronto beaten at home by a suddenly resurgent Cleveland, while Dallas Keuchel led Houston over Seattle.

The Cardinals sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh and erased a 5-3 deficit by scoring five runs with two outs. Kolten Wong followed Heyward’s hit with a run-scoring single to push the lead to 8-5, taking their eighth win in nine games.

Washington fell 6 1/2 games behind the New York Mets in the NL East.

Los Angeles’ Adrian Gonzalez singled in the winning run with the bases loaded in the 14th inning, lifting the Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over San Francisco in the opener of a series between the NL West’s top two teams.

In the 14th, Giants reliever Mike Broadway (0-1) gave up a walk and two singles to load the bases. Giants reliever Yusmeiro Petit came on and Gonzalez hit his first pitch to deep left field, ending the 5-hour, 29-minute game.

Cleveland’s Jerry Sands singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Indians won 4-2 at Toronto to extend their winning streak to six games.

Indians starter Danny Salazar (12-7) struck out 10 and allowed two runs in seven innings. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the fifth time this season.

Cleveland matched its longest winning streak of the season and halted Toronto’s run at four.

Houston’s Dallas Keuchel allowed one run and struck out eight in seven innings to become the American League’s first 16-game winner and lead the Astros to an 8-3 win over Seattle.

Keuchel (16-6) improved to 12-0 at home this season and has won 13 straight in Houston dating back to last year to tie a franchise record set by Danny Darwin in 1989-90.

Boston’s David Ortiz hit his 495th career home run to help the Red Sox edge the New York Yankees 4-3.

Jackie Bradley Jr. had three hits for the Red Sox and threw out a runner at the plate.

The Yankees remained 1 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto.

San Diego’s Tyson Ross held Texas scoreless for seven innings and hit an RBI single as the Padres won 7-0.

The dominating performance by Ross (10-9) allowed him to reach double digits in victories for the second straight season. He struck out seven, and at the plate he hit a sharp single in the sixth to drive in Cory Spangenberg.

The Rangers dropped four games behind first-place Houston in the AL West and remained in the second AL wild-card spot.

Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer pitched six scoreless innings to guide the Rays past fading Baltimore 6-3.

Cincinnati’s Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall hit two-run homers in a four-run sixth inning that helped the Reds cruised past the Chicago Cubs 13-6.

New York’s Bartolo Colon breezed through eight snappy innings to steer the Mets to a 3-1 win against Philadelphia.

Oakland’s Mark Canha hit a three-run homer and Jake Smolinski’s three-run double highlighted a decisive third inning as the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 11-5 on another quirky night at the Coliseum when part of the outfield wall fell down and delayed the game.

Colorado rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning – Ben Paulsen hit a two-out, two-run single – to give the Rockies a 5-4 victory over Arizona.

Miami’s Martin Prado and Justin Bour each had an RBI double in the eighth inning as the Marlins beat Atlanta 4-0.
