Sonny Gray's no-hit bid for A's broken up by Rangers in 8th

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Sonny Gray allowed a leadoff single by Ryan Rua in the eighth inning, ending the Oakland pitcher’s opening-night bid for a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers.

Gray had allowed only two baserunners Monday night at the Oakland Coliseum before Rua sent a clean, sharp single to right field. Gray hit a batter with a pitch in the third inning, and Athletics left fielder Ben Zobrist dropped Leonys Martin’s fly ball for a two-base error in the sixth.

The 25-year-old Gray needed only 83 pitches to get through seven innings as the A’s tried to snap a 10-game losing streak on opening day, a major league record.

Zobrist backed Gray with a two-run homer in the first inning of his A’s debut. Oakland had a 7-0 lead in the eighth inning.
