CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Running back Cameron Artis-Payne is hoping there’s room for two Cams in the Carolina Panthers’ backfield.
He didn’t think there was at Auburn, where Cam Newton’s legendary status prompted Artis-Payne to go by a different name.
Artis-Payne said at Auburn he went by ”Cap,” a nickname derived from his initials, instead of Cam because ”people at Auburn are sensitive about their legends – and Cam definitely qualifies in that category.”
Auburn built a statue of Newton outside their stadium after leading the Tigers to a national championship in 2011.
Now Artis-Payne, the SEC’s leading rusher last season, will get a chance to play alongside him at the NFL level.
Artis-Payne says he’d like to be known as ”Cam” in Carolina.
