Browns’ pick Shelton overcame brother’s death to make NFL

BEREA, Ohio (AP) – On the four-year anniversary of the death of one of his older brothers, Danny Shelton began a new chapter in a life he once thought impossible.

Shelton was introduced Friday by the Cleveland Browns, who selected the massive Washington defensive tackle with the No. 12 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night.

On April 30, 2011, Shelton was just 17 when his brother, Shennon, was shot and killed following an argument and fight that quickly escalated. Shelton was so badly shaken by the incident that he became withdrawn and nearly gave up football.

But Shelton matured, persevered and has taken his first steps in the NFL. As he was handed his No. 71 Browns jersey, his mother, Oneone, proudly stood to the side of the dais with her eyes filled with tears. She wore a button over her heart honoring her late son.
