San Diego Chargers wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu has been fined $27,562 by the NFL for making contact with an official during the team’s loss to the Miami Dolphins last Sunday.
Ajirotutu was ejected in the third quarter after it was ruled he touched a referee while in a scrum with a Dolphins player.
Meanwhile, four members of the Baltimore Ravens were docked a total of $44,804 by the league for infractions during last week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Linebacker Terrell Suggs was fined $8,268 for his late hit on running back LeGarrette Blount.
Courtney Upshaw was fined $20,000 for roughing the passer after striking Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger late and in the neck area. Albert McClellan and Jeremy Zuttah also were each fined $8,268 for unnecessary roughness.
Suggs was flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness in Sunday night’s 43-23 loss to the Steelers when he hit Blount from behind.
Suggs said he wasn’t trying to injure Blount.
“He was running, and he was still up, and he was still moving the pile,” Suggs said. “I assessed the play, and that was the only way I could get him down without him gaining more yards.”
The hit drew critical comments from the Steelers. Linebacker James Harrison said it looked like Suggs was trying to injure Blount.
“He’s known to be a dirty player,” Blount said after the game. “As long as he does that, he’s going to continue to have people come after him and do whatever we did to get in his head.”
This is Suggs’ second fine of the season. In Week 2, he was fined $5,512 for wearing a gladiator helmet during player introductions.
Other players fined by the NFL on Friday:
• Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis was fined $16,537 for unnecessary roughness/striking an opponent away from the play after a helmet-to-helmet hit against New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham that the officials missed on the field last Thursday.
• New York Jets cornerback Marcus Williams was fined $8,268 for a horse-collar tackle on Kansas City wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.
