Phase 2 of jury selection to start in Aaron Hernandez trial

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) – The second phase of jury selection is due to start in the murder trial of ex-New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez, who’s charged with killing semiprofessional football player Odin Lloyd.

Sixty jurors are expected to report to the courthouse Friday, where Bristol County Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh will question them individually. The questioning will be done outside the public’s hearing.

Lawyers for either side may ask the judge to dismiss prospective jurors for good cause, such as they’re biased. Each side is allowed to excuse 18 jurors without giving a reason.

More than 1,000 people were in the initial jury pool. The court will seat 18 total jurors, including six alternates.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to the 2013 killing of Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee’s sister.
