ASHBURN, Va. (AP) – Robert Griffin III’s fifth-year contract option for the 2016 season will be exercised by the Washington Redskins.
New general manager Scot McCloughan says the team will submit the proper paperwork to the NFL by next week’s deadline.
McCloughan made the announcement at the beginning of his news conference Monday to discuss the upcoming draft, which begins Thursday night.
He says the decision on Griffin ”does not affect our draft process at all.”
The Redskins have three quarterbacks signed for next season: Griffin, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy. All started at times last season, when Washington went 4-12.
Griffin was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 draft, then earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. But he tore knee ligaments in a playoff game at the end of that season.
