SC senator questions benefits analysis of Panthers HQ moveBy JEFFREY COLLINS

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) A state senator says a detailed analysis of an economic incentive bill meant to lure the Carolina Panthers practice fields to South Carolina has left him with more questions.

Democratic state Sen. Dick Harpootlian of Columbia said Wednesday he will continue to object to the bill until he gets answers. He was joined by conservative Republican Sen. Chip Campsen of the Isle of Palms.

The proposal passed by the House last month and enthusiastically supported by Gov. Henry McMaster offers around $120 million in tax breaks and other incentives to get the Panthers to move their team headquarters and practice facility from downtown Charlotte, North Carolina.

The analysis by an economist retained by Harpootlian says the state’s likely benefit is $1.1 billion, not $3.8 billion as estimated by state officials.
