HOUSTON (AP) First-year Houston Texans general manager Brian Gaine showed through his first draft exactly what the team’s game plan was – adding competition to the roster.
Gaine used four of his eight picks to add depth at tight end and in the secondary.
In the third round on Friday, Gaine drafted Stanford safety Justin Reid and University of Central Florida tight end Jordan Akins.
On Saturday, Gaine added Mississippi State tight end Jordan Thomas with his 211th overall pick and then San Jose State cornerback Jermaine Kelly with his final pick of the draft.
Gaine also drafted Mississippi State offensive lineman Martinas Rankin in the third round to add depth. The Texans released offensive tackle Derek Newton earlier this month leaving room for this addition.
With his three other picks, Gaine drafted speedster Keke Coutee out of Texas Tech at wide receiver with his lone pick of the fourth round and then took a pair of outside linebackers.
Gaine drafted Wake Forest’s Duke Ejiofor with his 177th overall pick and Stanford’s Peter Kalambayi with the 214th overall pick.
