MONTREAL (AP) The Montreal Canadiens won a sixth straight game to open a season for the first time in the franchise’s storied history by defeating Detroit 4-1 on Saturday.
The Canadiens best prior record in the first six games was five wins and an overtime loss in 1977-78.
In other games, Edmonton notched its first victory of the season by winning at Calgary, Chicago sent Columbus to its worst start in franchise history, and Pittsburgh held on to edge Toronto.
Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher scored in the second period and the Red Wings got a goal through rookie Dylan Larkin.
Jeff Petry scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, Tomas Plekanec made it 3-1, and Brian Flynn scored an empty-netter for the Canadiens.
Edmonton’s Connor McDavid scored twice and added an assist for his first multipoint game as the Oilers won 5-2 at Calgary.
The first overall pick in the June draft, the 18-year-old McDavid broke a 1-1 tie with 3:29 left in the second period. After carrying the puck through the neutral zone, he used a screen and scored past Jonas Hiller on a long wrist shot.
McDavid capped the scoring with 3:40 left in the third on the power-play.
Taylor Hall added a goal and two assists, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov also netted for Edmonton, while David Jones scored twice for Calgary.
Chicago’s Artem Anisimov and Teuvo Teravainen scored in a 1:05 span late in the second period to break a scoreless tie and steer the Blackhawks to a 4-1 win against Columbus.
The Blue Jackets are 0-6-0; the worst start in franchise history.
Marian Hossa added a power-play goal in the third and Patrick Kane completed the scoring with an empty-netter.
Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Olli Maatta scored first-period goals and the Penguins clung on to down Toronto 2-1.
Phil Kessel faced Toronto for the first time since the Maple Leafs shipped the three-time All-Star to Pittsburgh in July. Marc-Andre Fleury, playing in his 600th career game, made 26 saves.
