NEW YORK (AP) Montreal’s Shea Weber scored a power-play goal with 2:57 remaining to lift the Canadiens to a fifth straight victory, 3-2 at the New York Islanders on Wednesday.
While the Islanders lost, their local rivals, the New York Rangers, rallied for what turned into a comfortable win against Boston.
With the Islanders’ Nick Leddy off for slashing, Weber fired a shot from the point. It was just the second power-play goal in 23 opportunities given up by New York’s league-leading penalty-killing unit.
Paul Byron and Phillip Danault also scored to help Montreal improve to 6-0-1 and remain the only team in the NHL without a loss in regulation time.
John Tavares and Dennis Seidenberg scored for New York, which has lost its past seven games against the Canadiens.
The Rangers defeated Boston 5-2, led by two goals from Brandon Pirri.
Rick Nash, Kevin Hayes and Jimmy Vesey also scored for New York, which conceded the opening two goals of the game to Boston, via David Pastrnak and Austin Czarina.
The Rangers scored three times in the final 10:44 of the second period.
Edmonton stretched its winning sequence to four games by downing Washington 4-1, with Benoit Pouliot scoring twice.
Anaheim’s Jakob Silfverberg scored a short-handed goal and another on the power play as the Ducks crushed Nashville 6-1.
