Maple Leafs appoint Kyle Dubas as new general manager

Toronto (AP) The Toronto Maple Leafs stayed in-house for their new general manager, choosing Kyle Dubas on Friday.

Dubas joined the team as assistant GM in July 2014. The 32-year-old Dubas is an advocate of analytics and succeeds 75-year-old Lou Lamoriello.

Lamoriello shifted to the role of senior adviser with the Leafs last month. Most expected team president Brendan Shanahan to choose between Dubas and 55-year-old Mark Hunter, another assistant GM with the team.

Dubas’ responsibilities had included player personnel, managing the club’s player development department, farm system and research & development. He oversaw the top prospects as GM of the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

The Marlies were AHL regular-season champions for second time in three years.

The Maple Leafs set franchise records for points (105) and wins (49) in the regular season, but were eliminated in seven games by Boston in the first round of the playoffs.

In 2015, Forbes named Dubas among the sports industry’s young stars in its annual Top 30 Under 30 in Sports.
