Penguins win 3-1 to end Capital streak

WASHINGTON (AP) Pittsburgh ended Washington’s five-game winning streak by scoring twice in the third period to win 3-1 at the Capitals on Wednesday.

Phil Kessel netted the go-ahead goal off Evgeni Malkin’s pass less than 2 minutes after Beau Bennett had scored the tying goal for the Penguins.

In the day’s other games, Ottawa won a shootout against Calgary to notch its first home win of the season and Nashville won at San Jose.

Washington and Pittsburgh went through two periods scoreless, due chiefly to superb play by both goalies.

Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov put the hosts ahead about 1-1/2 minutes into the third, when his wrist shot appeared to deflect off the left skate of an opponent and past Marc-Andre Fleury.

All of 24 seconds later, it was tied thanks to Bennett, who missed the previous five games with an injury. His initial shot was blocked, but Bennett put in the rebound.

Soon after, Malkin sent the puck in front of the goal and through an opponent’s legs to Kessel.

Ottawa’s Mika Zibanejad scored the shootout winner to give the Senators a 5-4 win against Calgary.

Zack Smith, Bobby Ryan, Kyle Turris and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored in regulation for the Senators, who snapped a four-game losing sequence (0-2-2). Ottawa had also been 0-2-2 at home.

Dougie Hamilton, Joe Colborne, Kris Russell and Sam Bennett scored for the Flames, who have now lost three straight.

The third period featured five goals and two lead changes.

Nashville’s Eric Nystrom scored early and Calle Jarnkrok scored late as the Predators beat San Jose 2-1.
