Russian winger Danis Zaripov has been cleared to pursue an NHL contract after being banned by the Kontinental Hockey League and International Ice Hockey Federation for doping.
Zaripov says in a statement released by his agent that he looks forward to playing in North America and will continue to appeal his suspension.
The 36-year-old player had his KHL contract terminated and was banned by the IIHF until 2019. He tested positive for unidentified substances, including a stimulant and banned diuretic or masking agent during the 2016-17 season.
The NHL office had to sign off on clearing Zaripov before he could look to sign a contract. Agent Dan Milstein told The Associated Press on Monday that Zaripov was seeking a one-year deal so he could prove himself.
