Sabres trade with Nashville to acquire rights to VeseyBy JOHN WAWROW

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) The Buffalo Sabres have acquired the rights to unsigned prospect forward Jimmy Vesey in making a trade with the Nashville Predators.

Buffalo gave up its second of four third-round picks in this week’s draft for Vesey, who was the Hobey Baker winner after completing his senior year at Harvard.

The 22-year-old opted to become a free agent rather than sign with Nashville, which selected him in the third round of the 2012 draft. Buffalo now has exclusive negotiating rights to sign Vesey before he becomes a free agent on Aug. 15.

At 6-foot-2 and 201 pounds, Vesey led the ECAC with 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists) in 33 games last season. Overall, he has 80 goals and 64 assists in 128 games at Harvard.
