SAN JOSE, California (AP) San Jose Sharks forward Raffi Torres apologized Thursday for an illegal check to the head of Anaheim’s Jakob Silfverberg that resulted in the longest suspension in NHL history for a hit on another player.
Torres isn’t appealing his 41-game suspension for the hit on Silfverberg in a preseason game. It’s the fifth and most significant suspension for the Canadian in his NHL career.
In a statement released by the team, he said, ”I am disappointed I have put myself in a position to be suspended again.” He also said he was ”extremely thankful” that Silfverberg wasn’t seriously injured as a result of the play.
Torres’ previous longest suspension was for 21 games for a high hit on Chicago’s Marian Hossa in the first round of the 2012 NHL playoffs when he played for Arizona.
