DALLAS (AP) Dallas’ Jason Spezza scored three goals, including the tiebreaker late in the third period that lifted the Stars to a 4-2 win against Edmonton on Tuesday.
Edmonton’s boom youngster Connor McDavid scored his first NHL goal, but struggled in the faceoff circle again, contributing to the Oilers’ defeat.
Elsewhere, Montreal continued its strong road form to open the season by winning at Pittsburgh, San Jose won easily at undermanned Washington, and Vancouver had a victory at still-winless Los Angeles.
Spezza’s go-ahead goal for a 3-2 lead with 4:30 remaining came moments after goaltender Kari Lehtonen had stopped Nail Yakupov on a breakaway. Lehtonen made his season debut after backing up Antti Niemi in the first two games.
Spezza finished off his hat trick with an empty-net goal for the Stars, whose 52 shots as their most in a game for 20 years.
McDavid, selected No. 1 overall in the June draft, scored in the second period to pull the Oilers even at 2-2 after they had fallen behind 2-0.
McDavid won just three of nine in the faceoff circle to put him at 8 of 33 for the season.
Jamie Benn also scored for Dallas. Oscar Klefbom had a goal for the Oilers.
Montreal’s Tomas Fleischmann netted his first goal of the season early in the third period and the Canadiens edged Pittsburgh 3-2.
Montreal wrapped up its season-opening trip with a perfect four-game record, and condemned Pittsburgh to a third-straight loss to start the season.
Max Pacioretty scored twice for the Canadiens, and Carey Price finished with 31 saves.
Beau Bennett and Kris Letang scored for Pittsburgh. Phil Kessel had an assist in his home debut with the Penguins after his big summer move from Toronto.
San Jose goalie Martin Jones made 31 saves for his second straight shutout and the Sharks took advantage of Alex Ovechkin’s absence from Washington’s lineup to win 5-0 at the Capitals.
The Sharks improved to 3-0-0 and have outscored their opponents 12-1. Jones allowed a goal on the first shot he faced this season, but has blanked opponents for 178 minutes and 11 seconds since.
Matt Nieto and Chris Tierney each had a goal and an assist, and Joe Thornton, Mike Brown and Tomas Hertl added goals.
Ovechkin missed the game for unspecified personal reasons.
Vancouver goalie Ryan Miller made 15 saves in his 36th career shutout to help the Canucks win 3-0 at Los Angeles.
Adam Cracknell scored his second goal in two games, Alexander Edler scored and Derek Dorsett added an empty-net goal for the Canucks.

Rinne has played a major role in that success, allowing only two goals so far. Playing his club-record 384th game, he lost his shutout when Kyle Palmieri scored on a power play with 1:40 left.
