DALLAS (AP) The dullness of the first day of the NHL draft gave way to significant activity on Day 2 in the form of a trade between the Hurricanes and Flames that laid the groundwork for more moves to come.
Carolina acquired defenseman Dougie Hamilton and gave up Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin in a five-player trade with the Flames on Saturday, the biggest deal yet this offseason. After missing the playoffs the past nine seasons, the Hurricanes will likely make more moves in the coming days.
Amid the fast-and-furious selecting in Rounds 2 through 7, word spread that top free agent John Tavares will meet with five teams when the negotiating window begins Sunday. He could still return to the New York Islanders, but the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs could get a crack at wooing the 27-year-old center.
